Performance Pathways

Performance Pathways builds and sustains highly effective systems for talented athletes to ensure success at future Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Performance Pathways Team is a collaboration between UK Sport and the English Institute of Sport (EIS).
It supports World Class Programmes to identify and develop talented athletes and the construction of the underpinning support systems.

Why is there a Pathway team at the EIS?

The work of the Performance Pathways Team focuses on supporting sports to improve their systems of performance development through the following four work areas:

    1. Pathway Frontline Technical Solutions: In partnership with sports, the Performance Pathway team deliver tailored solutions to identify and develop talented athletes to help build a sustainable system i.e. talent recruitment and confirmation programmes, talent transfer and development curriculums.
    2. Pathway Education: Provide educational opportunities for development coaches and managers covering an array of topics unique to the elite developing athlete.
Performance Pathway Learning Hub: As part of Pathway’s Education support, the Performance Pathways team have developed the Learning Hub.  The learning hub is a free online service aimed at sharing up-to date insight, ‘good practice’, learning and research from our industry and beyond relating to all aspects of athlete and performance pathway development with those working in the British sporting system.  Our aspiration is that the Performance Pathways Learning Hub contributes to improving the collective knowledge and practice of our United Kingdom talent and performance pathway people (coaches, leaders, managers, and practitioners), and subsequently enhance the holistic athlete experience, ensuring they fulfil their potential.  As a site member, users will get access to our quarterly online magazine ‘Talent Matters’, along with other relevant content from our continually growing resource library.
If you work in talent development or a performance pathway in the UK, visit the Performance Pathway Learning Hub to register and get access to our online resources.

3. Pathway Analytics: Enable sports to robustly measure and benchmark the effectiveness of their performance pathway using specialist diagnostic tools i.e. Pathway

4. Pathway Strategy: Assist sports to develop and implement an aligned pathway vision and strategy from Podium Foundations level to Podium level.

How does Pathways have a performance impact?

As part of the frontline solutions area, the Performance Pathways Team have worked in partnership with 20 Olympic and Paralympic sports and over 100 World Class coaches; run 12 National athlete recruitment campaigns, and assessed over 7000 athletes.

These projects have resulted in over 100 newly identified athletes entering the World Class system across 17 sports with over 450 international appearances made and over 150 international medals won. Several of these athletes were selected to represent Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games and 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games.
