The EIS works with British Canoeing to deliver support to Canoe Slalom at the Lee Valley White Water Centre and Holme Pierrepont and for Canoe Sprint at the EIS Performance Centre at Bisham Abbey and Eton Dorney. EIS practitioners are embedded within the GB Canoeing programmes, delivering support both in training and at camps and competitions.

Slalom represents a highly technical discipline which requires athletes to negotiate gates on white water in the fastest time possible. To this end, understanding success through qualitative and quantitative feedback is hugely important in informing the coaching process, athlete skill acquisition and establishing development needs in Canoe Slalom.

In partnership with the EIS, British Canoeing has developed a world class performance analysis set up at the Lee Valley White Water Centre, where cameras can track athletes down the entire course and show key turns from numerous angles, with all footage available to coaches and athletes almost immediately.

This data can also assist the integration with other services including strength and conditioning and physiotherapy, where understanding on water demands help in risk profiling and athlete development.

Strength development and more importantly, strength transfer within the boat also plays a key role in Canoe Sprint, which takes place on a flat water course up to 1000m in length. Athletes are often required to peak three times across two days in key competitions to be successful.

Throughout the current cycle EIS services have focused on understanding the physical qualities needed to underpin Canoe Sprint performance and work alongside coaches to establish effective race day strategies matched to the profile of the athlete.
